Construction Student Celebrates Success!

Published 10 July

We have reason to celebrate within our Construction Department as adult Plastering student Ivanna Clary won the Learning for Work Award at the West Yorkshire Adult Learner Awards hosted by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) at the Civic Hall in Leeds in front of over 100 guests.

Now in their second year, the West Yorkshire Adult Learner Awards recognise the exceptional achievements of learners aged 19 and over who have transformed their lives through adult education.

This award marks the second for Ivanna within a month as she also won the Excellence Award at the Craven College Further Education Awards 2025.

Ivanna’s journey at Craven College began with a one-day Introduction to Plastering course, which ignited a passion which has seen her progress to a achieve a Level 1 Certificate in Plastering and progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Plastering. Not content with stopping there, Ivanna has also completed introductory courses in joinery and brickwork and is now planning on studying to a further advanced level in brickwork to further enhance her skills.

Ivanna is self-employed, working with vulnerable women in assisted living ensuring those who might feel uncomfortable having male tradespeople in their homes still receive the help they need. Using the skills she has learned at College, she provides practical support with DIY and household jobs. Ivanna’s end goal is not just personal achievement but creating a safer, more supportive environment for these women by offering skilled, trusted assistance.

Steven Syers, Lecturer in Plastering said “Ivanna’s success is a testament to her determination to learning and her sharp attention to detail in plastering. Her drive to expand her skills through short courses in joinery, brickwork, and plumbing shows a commitment to excellence that sets her apart in every trade she tackles.

Ivanna’s dedication to lifelong learning embodies the very essence of what adult education can achieve – not just transforming an individual’s future but positively impacting an entire community.
